What is Reiki?

Reiki  (pronounced Ray-Key) is a 'hands on' healing treatment originating from Japan.  It is a simple but effective treatment and involves the channelling of energy.  Energy is the essence of life and so is a natural and effective means of helping the body restore itself to its' balance of homeostasis.

It has no religious conotation.  Involving the power of touch, it is simple and natural.  Having been confused with 'spiritual healing' some people can feel a little awkward about receiving it.  Anyone and everyone can use Reiki to improve the well being of themselves and loved ones.  During Reiki training, you receive attunements which enable you to use the energy more effectively.  Reiki is not magic, it is not a cure for all, but never underestimate the power of touch, which many of us in the Western world require so much to function better physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Energy, goes where it is most needed, perhaps that is to aid with physical repair, or it can be mental or emotional.  Therefore, in any Reiki treatment, you will not necessarily benefit in the way you had initially intended to. Energy flows through energy pathways in the body, sometimes known as meridians.  There are invisible wheels which are located at seven different areas ouside the body, and these are known as chakras.  They include the crown chakra, the third eye, throat, heart, solar plexus, root chakra. Different crystals can be used to help energy in these areas.

What does a treatment involve?

After a consultation has been done finding out information about your general health/well being and lifestyle.  You will be asked to lie fully clothed on a couch and be covered with a blanket.  During a treatment I will place my hands on your chakras, starting with the head, and then working down the body.  After that, you will be turned over, and I will also work areas on the back.

It is a gentle and uplifting treatment, enabling you to feel refreshed, reenergised and truly fantastic afterwards!

You're not a Reiki Master, does this affect the treatment at all?

No, it certainly doesn't.  To become a Reiki Master you have an extra attunement but that doesn't mean that that person will be a better therapist.  There is a certain amount of snobbery with regards to Reiki and the therapist's ability and qualifications.  Some masters have paid thousands to qualify, and some have claimed to have been 'chosen'.  For all therapists it is a personal decision how far they wish to take their Reiki.  There is a certain degree of Reiki used in every holistic treatment.  The power of touch and how you bond with your therapist makes the treatment so unique.

In order to enjoy and benefit from Reiki treatments look for someone with at least a second degree, as this means they are legally able to practise, and above all someone you feel relaxed with.  Remember that anyone can practise Reiki, its' natural and is used in all complementary therapies.  The power of touch should never be underestimated, make sure you feel at ease with your therapist, relax and enjoy!
